Home / Services / Kitchen Renovation in St Kilda / Painting
Paint is usually the last thing to go on in a kitchen renovation, and everyone notices it. It also shows every shortcut taken underneath. Before recommending a coating, Ivan Bodnar checks the walls, ceilings and trims for moisture, substrate condition and existing damage. Interior and exterior painting elsewhere in the home is also available as related work.
Walls, ceilings and trims are painted once the joinery, splashback and surface repairs are finished.
Interior rooms and exterior surfaces beyond the kitchen are scoped and quoted separately.
A free on-site assessment comes first. The written quotation follows it, never the other way round.
Painting over a problem hides it for a while and then it shows again. Ivan applies the same preparation rule to paint as to tiles and benchtops. You can read more on surface preparation & suitable materials.
01 MOISTURE
Bubbling, staining or soft plaster near a sink or window can point to moisture. If you paint before it is understood, you can end up redoing the work.
02 SUBSTRATE
Plaster, plasterboard, timber trims and previously painted surfaces each need checking for soundness and adhesion before a coating is chosen.
03 DAMAGE & GAPS
Cracks, holes left by removed fittings and gaps where new cabinetry meets the wall are repaired and filled first.
04 PROTECTION
Benchtops, appliances, windows and floors are masked and covered before any coating goes on.
A kitchen has to cope with steam, cooking splashes and regular wiping in a way a hallway doesn’t. The wall beside a cooktop, the ceiling above it and the trims around a window over the sink each face different conditions. Ivan discusses which coatings suit each surface and how you will actually clean them. Those choices are then written into the quotation, so you know what is planned before the work starts.
The photo shows gap sealing around cabinetry and trim. This kind of detail is done before painting, while the room is still protected.
Interior rooms. Living areas, hallways and bedrooms follow the same approach: check what is there, prepare it, then paint. Painting often goes alongside plasterboard installation & plastering.
Exterior surfaces. Exterior work depends on the condition of the surface, access to it and the weather. It is assessed on site and quoted on its own.
Flats. In a St Kilda apartment building, owners corporation conditions may apply, and you may not be able to change exterior or common property. See apartment kitchens & owners corporation considerations.
Limits. An inspection can’t reveal every concealed issue, so scope can change once old finishes come off. Any electrical or plumbing changes are done by appropriately licensed specialists. See who does what.
